Seasons and the weather
There are four seasons in a year. They are winter, spring, summer and autumn. Each season has got three months.
Winter. Our year starts and finishes in winter. December, January and February are winter months. Days are short and nights are long. In winter it often snows. It is frosty. All trees and ground are white with snow. There is ice on the rivers and lakes. If the sun shines it is not warm, because the temperature is low. Some animals sleep in their dens in winter. You can see icicles on the roofs of the houses. We may go skiing, sledging and skating in winter. People wear coats, scarves, hats, gloves and boots in winter. Children like playing snowballs and making snowmen. People celebrate St. Nicholas’s Day, New Year, Christmas and St. Valentine’s Day in winter.
Spring.
After winter spring comes. March, April and May are spring months. In spring it gets warmer. Days become longer and nights shorter. The sun shines. Snow and ice melt. We can see first green grass and snowdrops in the parks and gardens. Birds come back from warm countries and make their nests in the trees. The wind sometimes blows. It often rains. People start working in the gardens in spring. They dig around the trees, whitewash trees. In the countryside people work in the fields and sow seeds in the soil. We may wear jackets, sweaters, suits, jeans, trainers and shoes in spring. People celebrate the Women’s Day, Easter, May Day and Victory Day in spring.
Summer
After spring summer comes. June, July and August are summer months. In summer days are long and nights are short. The weather is wonderful in summer. But sometimes it is too hot. The sun shines in the blue sky. There are a lot of bright flowers everywhere. Trees are green. Sometimes there are clouds in the sky. It may be shower from time to time. People usually have vacations in summer and they have a rest. Schoolchildren have summer holidays. They don’t go to school. But they may go to the forest or river. Some children go to the rest camp. A lot of families go to the seaside. People wear shorts, T-shirts, dresses, skirts, caps and sandals. We celebrate Constitution Day and the Day of Independence in summer.
Autumn
After summer autumn comes. September, October and November are autumn months. It gets cooler. Days become shorter and nights - longer. The wind blows. It often rains. Birds fly away to warm countries. Leaves in the trees become yellow, red and brown. They fall from the trees on the ground. The sky is often grey. It may snow in November. Children start going to school. People go to the forest to pick up mushrooms. They gather crops in the village. People wear warm clothes: jackets, coats, hats, boots. In autumn we celebrate Cossacks Day and Halloween.
